JPS Statement: JPS Statement on Lives and Well-being of Children in Ukraine

Japan Pediatric Society (JPS) expresses serious concerns for the lives and well-being of all children and their families in Ukraine. Their safety is critically endangered by massive and indiscriminate attacks in the city districts. Precious lives of children are lost, and many children are injured. We were stunned by reports that maternity and children hospitals, the last resort for pregnant women, newborns, and injured or sick infants and children, were targeted and destroyed. A countless number of children are compelled to leave their familiar lands and homes as refugees. We deeply regret the tremendous hardship that Ukrainian children need to go through.

Armed conflicts invariably victimize innocent civilians, and infants and children are the most vulnerable. However, the protection and care of children should be prioritized and ensured by all feasible measures under any circumstances. JPS calls on the international community for an immediate ceasefire, and necessary interventions for the safety of children to be taken.

As pediatric professionals, we underline that uninterrupted medical care of chronically ill children and children with disabilities, indispensable for their survival, should be provided by any means. Even if not physically hurt or ill, immature infants and children are psychologically traumatized, and we should pay special attention to their internal emotions, such as grief, fear, and anxiety. Humanitarian aids should secure supplies and environments, necessary for the survival, growth, and development of infants and children.

JPS offers our sincere support for children and their families in distress and craves for the fair, equal, and dignified care for Ukrainian children.
